Goa Announces Rs 70 Lakh Annual Grant for Class C Municipalities
Goa Rs 70 Lakh Grant for Class C Municipalities

The Department of Urban Development in Goa has introduced a new scheme to provide an annual grant of up to Rs 70 lakh for Class C municipalities. This financial assistance is aimed at covering operational and administrative expenses, including salaries and pension benefits for employees.

Grant Details and Allocation

Under the scheme, grants will be provided equivalent to the actual staff salaries and pension expenditures, subject to a maximum of Rs 50 lakh per annum for salaries and Rs 25 lakh per annum for pension payments. This structured allocation ensures that the funds are directed towards the most critical financial obligations of these smaller municipal bodies.

Addressing Financial Challenges

An official from the department highlighted that smaller municipalities often struggle due to insufficient revenue sources and heavy reliance on government grants to meet their expenses. These financial constraints sometimes lead to delays in salary disbursements and pension payments, causing insecurity among employees. The scheme is specifically designed to alleviate these issues by providing a dedicated funding stream.

Class C municipalities are tasked with performing functions similar to larger councils but lack the financial stability required to operate smoothly. The new initiative aims to strengthen their financial position, enabling them to pay salaries and disburse pension benefits on time.

Scheme Validity and Revision

The scheme will remain valid for a period of five years. However, it is subject to revision based on prevailing financial conditions and the evolving needs of the municipalities. This flexibility ensures that the support remains relevant and effective over time.
