Amritsar Enhances Sanitation with GPS-Equipped Waste Patrol Vehicles
In a significant move to bolster sanitation efforts and maintain cleanliness on major thoroughfares, the solid waste management company operating in Amritsar has launched six new patrolling vehicles equipped with GPS technology. These vehicles are tasked with monitoring and removing garbage from key roads and important areas across the city, aiming to address littering issues promptly and efficiently.
Daily Operations and Coverage Details
According to officials, the GPS-enabled vehicles will patrol nearly 384 kilometres of main roads and critical stretches each day. Each vehicle is scheduled to operate for approximately nine hours, starting at 11 am and continuing until 8 pm. During this time, they will systematically identify garbage accumulation on roadsides and ensure immediate collection and disposal to prevent environmental hazards.
Each patrolling unit is manned by a driver and two helpers, who work together to collect any waste spotted along the assigned routes. The collected garbage is then transported directly to designated dump sites for proper disposal. Officials highlighted that each vehicle has the capacity to lift around 1.25 tonnes of waste in a single trip, enabling efficient handling of substantial amounts of refuse.
Enhanced Visibility and Monitoring Systems
To ensure these vehicles are easily recognizable during operations, they have been fitted with yellow beacon lights that remain switched on while patrolling and collecting waste. This feature serves to alert commuters and residents that garbage collection activities are underway, promoting safety and awareness in the community.
The introduction of GPS tracking extends beyond the new patrolling vehicles. The company has been managing door-to-door garbage collection in Amritsar for the past five months, deploying around 215 mini-tippers to cover all 85 municipal wards. Out of these, GPS systems have already been activated in 120 vehicles to monitor their movements and ensure adherence to assigned routes.
Strict Route Compliance and Accountability
Company officials emphasized that the GPS technology plays a crucial role in preventing drivers from deviating from their designated routes. If any vehicle moves to another ward or location without authorisation, the monitoring system will immediately alert senior officials. This measure enhances accountability and ensures that waste collection services are delivered consistently across the city.
This initiative represents a proactive step towards improving urban hygiene and public health in Amritsar, leveraging technology to streamline waste management processes and foster a cleaner environment for residents.
