The Gujarat government on Friday announced a series of prudency measures in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to save fuel in the wake of the West Asia crisis. The government stated that ministers, officers, and employees in the administration have been advised to avoid traveling on official assignments unless absolutely necessary and to attend such events through virtual meetings instead.
Vehicle and Travel Restrictions
Ministers and officers who have been allotted multiple official vehicles will be required to deposit all additional vehicles, except one, into the government vehicle pool. This move aims to reduce fuel consumption and optimize resource utilization.
Work from Home Encouraged
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Jitu Vaghani said that while working from home is a recommended option for both the government and the private sector, no specific guidelines are being issued on the matter. "Work from home is a desirable option, but not compulsory. There are several jobs where physical presence is essential. However, in cases where one can work from home, it is desirable," the minister explained.
Promotion of Virtual Meetings and Electric Vehicles
The new government guidelines, issued on Friday, emphasize avoiding physical travel, promoting video conferencing, and using electric vehicles instead of those running on conventional fuels. "Considering the current global situation, these decisions are aimed at significantly reducing the consumption of petrol, diesel, and foreign exchange, thereby committing to the protection of both the environment and the public treasury," Vaghani said.
Government Canteens to Use PNG
He added that within the next six months, all government canteens will operate on Piped Natural Gas (PNG). This step is expected to further reduce dependence on conventional fuels and lower emissions.
Extended Metro Services and Monitoring
To encourage people to adopt public transport, Vaghani announced that the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro service will now operate until 11 pm. The minister also stated that a strict monitoring mechanism will be put into place to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply in the state. The food and civil supplies department is keeping a close watch on the supply of petrol and diesel at all outlets. After reviewing the available petrol and diesel stocks in the state, the Chief Minister has directed that stocks be monitored daily by the control room, and supply be ensured so that citizens are not inconvenienced.
