Gurgaon Municipal Authorities Launch Drive Against Unauthorized Meat Shops
The Directorate of Urban Local Bodies (ULB) in Haryana has issued a directive to all municipal corporations, instructing them to initiate a comprehensive drive to identify and shut down unauthorized meat shops operating within municipal limits. This action specifically targets establishments that are functioning without valid licenses and those located in close proximity to religious places.
Annual Pre-Navratri Routine Exercise
Officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) have clarified that this is not an unprecedented measure but rather a routine exercise conducted annually ahead of the Navratri festival. "Our teams have already visited meat shops in markets and asked them to shut down considering religious sentiments. This is a regular exercise we do each year," stated an MCG official. The directive is aimed at respecting the religious sentiments of the community during this significant Hindu festival.
Scope of the Operation and Current Status
According to MCG data, Gurgaon currently has 490 licensed meat shops. The crackdown is focused on those operating without proper authorization. However, it is important to note that online meat delivery platforms continue to operate in the city, and meat sections in supermarkets are also functioning as usual. The order, issued on Thursday, mandates all municipal commissioners and corporation commissioners to ensure strict enforcement against stores selling meat without a valid license from the competent authority.
Broader Context and Implementation
This directive underscores the ongoing efforts by urban local bodies to regulate commercial activities in alignment with local norms and religious observances. The drive is part of a larger initiative to maintain order and compliance within municipal jurisdictions. Authorities are expected to conduct thorough inspections and take necessary actions to ensure that all meat-selling establishments adhere to the licensing requirements and location guidelines, particularly during sensitive periods like Navratri.
