Gurgaon Sector 40 Braces for Monsoon Woes as Rainwater Harvesting Systems Lie Defunct
With the monsoon season rapidly approaching, residents of Sector 40 in Gurgaon have voiced serious concerns regarding the deteriorating state of rainwater harvesting infrastructure and the absence of a robust stormwater drainage network. They warn that these deficiencies pose a significant risk of widespread waterlogging in the area.
Years of Neglect Render Harvesting Systems Inoperative
Local inhabitants report that the majority of rainwater harvesting structures installed across the sector have remained non-functional for several years due to persistent neglect and a complete lack of maintenance. Approximately ten such systems were originally set up in parks and at the community centre, but many are now either clogged with debris or entirely abandoned.
Abhimanyu Yadav, the President of the Sector 40 Residents Welfare Association (RWA), highlighted the ineffectiveness of repeated complaints to municipal authorities. "The monsoon is just a few months away, yet there has been no concerted effort to revive these critical rainwater harvesting systems. Most are either blocked or completely defunct because they were never properly maintained," he stated.
Yadav further explained that while some repair initiatives were undertaken last year, the work was left incomplete. "For harvesting to be truly effective, the recharge pits need to be excavated to a depth of around 190 to 200 feet. Currently, this is not functional, rendering the systems useless," he added.
Inadequate Drainage Exacerbates Waterlogging Threats
Residents point out that a large rainwater harvesting setup near the community centre is also lying unused, compounding the problem. They note that even light rainfall frequently leads to waterlogging in internal lanes, with water taking hours to recede due to the lack of proper stormwater drainage infrastructure.
Virender Yadav, Joint Secretary of the RWA, emphasized the urgency of the situation. "There is no proper stormwater drainage network in our sector. Water accumulates rapidly during rains and persists for extended periods. Unless the rainwater harvesting systems and drainage infrastructure are promptly repaired, we could face severe waterlogging throughout the monsoon," he said.
Municipal Corporation Announces Restoration Plans
In response to these growing concerns, an official from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has indicated that repair work is now being planned. "We have allocated resources for the restoration of rainwater harvesting systems across the city. This work will include increasing the depth of borewells and conducting necessary repairs. Our target is to complete these efforts by the end of May," the official assured.
However, residents remain skeptical, urging swift and transparent action to mitigate the impending monsoon challenges and ensure the sector's infrastructure is resilient against waterlogging.
