Water supply is slowly returning to normal across many parts of Gurgaon. This follows the successful repair of a critical 1,600mm master pipeline at the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant. However, a significant section of the city remains in distress. More than 1,500 families residing in the BPTP township located in Sector 37D are still completely dependent on water tankers for their daily needs.
A New Problem Emerges in Sector 37C
The reason for this continued hardship is a fresh incident of pipeline damage. The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) reports that a 250mm master pipeline, which supplies water to the BPTP area, was severely damaged. This occurred during electric cable-laying work being carried out by a contractor. The contractor was engaged by a developer of a nearby residential society.
This new damage has completely disrupted the water supply to the BPTP township. It compounds the difficulties for residents who have already been grappling with shortages since the previous Sunday.
Residents Voice Frustration and Demand Accountability
Sandeep Sharma, the President of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA) for BPTP Park Serene, expressed the community's frustration. "We were already without regular water supply since Sunday because of the earlier pipeline fault," Sharma said. "We were fully dependent on tankers. GMDA restored supply late last night, but water did not reach us by morning. We then learned that this new pipeline had been damaged."
Sharma highlighted a pattern of poor execution in utility works affecting the society. "The contractor is carrying out shoddy work," he asserted. "Earlier, the power cable was damaged during similar work. That forced residents to rely on diesel generator sets for two full days. It caused great inconvenience and added expense. Now the water pipeline is damaged. There has to be accountability for this."
Binny Singla, the Treasurer of the RWA, described the anxiety among residents. "Since morning, residents have been constantly asking when the water supply will resume," Singla said. "The initial lack of clear information from authorities only added to the confusion and worry."
Background of the Citywide Crisis
The broader water crisis in Gurgaon began last Friday. A major leakage was detected in the 1,600mm master pipeline at the Chandu Budhera plant. Officials explained that the fault was caused by the pipeline shrinking due to temperature variations. This affected supply from one of the city's main water sources. For several days, numerous areas were forced to depend on tanker water.
Repair work on this primary pipeline was finally completed on Tuesday evening. Following this, water supply improved significantly in most parts of the city. The situation in BPTP township, however, remains an exception due to the separate incident in Sector 37C.
GMDA Official Confirms Repair Efforts Underway
A GMDA official confirmed the damage to the pipeline in Sector 37C. The official stated that repair work is currently in progress. "The pipeline was damaged during cable-laying work by a contractor," the official said. "The same contractor is now carrying out the repairs. They have assured us that the fault will be rectified by tonight. Dewatering of the site is underway. We are monitoring the situation closely to restore water supply at the earliest possible time."
The residents of BPTP township now wait, hoping for a swift resolution to this latest disruption in their essential water services.
