Gurgaon's Major Infrastructure Overhaul: Rs 302 Crore Allocated for Traffic Relief
In a significant move to address chronic traffic congestion, Gurgaon is set to receive five new grade separators, including flyovers and underpasses, at key junctions across the city. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has allocated Rs 302 crore for these projects in the state budget, announced on Monday, aiming to streamline movement and reduce gridlock during peak hours.
Targeted Junctions for Decongestion
The grade separators have been strategically planned at five notorious choke points: Dadi Sati Chowk, Ambedkar Chowk, Bakhtawar Chowk, Millennium City Centre, and the Garhi railway crossing. These locations routinely experience severe traffic bottlenecks, impacting daily commutes and urban mobility.
Detailed Project Breakdown
Dadi Sati Chowk: A flyover project here has received approval for its detailed project report (DPR). Estimated to cost around Rs 47 crore, the 630-metre-long, three-lane structure will be 11 metres wide, flanked by 7.5-metre-wide service roads on both sides. It aims to ease congestion at the intersection of sectors 85, 86, 89, and 90, which currently handles nearly 9,770 passenger car units (PCUs) during peak hours, with projections exceeding 10,000 PCUs by construction start. Tenders for this project are expected to be floated this month.
Ambedkar Chowk: Awaiting DPR approval, a proposed Rs 59-crore flyover at this busy intersection will connect sectors 45, 46, 51, and 52. The 950-metre-long, two-lane bidirectional structure is designed to streamline movement through the junction, which records around 6,100 PCUs during peak hours according to GMDA data. It will benefit residents of Ardee City and Mayfield Garden, as well as commuters from Malibu Towne and South City-2, reducing stoppages and improving flow towards Sohna Road.
Bakhtawar Chowk: GMDA has approved a design for a 550-metre-long underpass here, but GMRL, executing the project alongside metro construction, has proposed a double-decker structure. This would feature vehicular traffic on the lower deck and a metro corridor above, with the junction also hosting the proposed Sector 47 metro station on the Millennium City Centre–Cyber City line. A final decision on the design is pending government approval.
Millennium City Centre: A proposed underpass at this intersection is advancing, with a consultant conducting a detailed study. The Rs 80-crore project received administrative approval in November last year and aims to alleviate long tailbacks from heavy traffic originating from Millennium City Centre, Signature Tower, and Sector 29.
Garhi Railway Crossing: A rail overbridge (ROB) is planned here to improve connectivity between sectors 36 and 37 and Dwarka Expressway. Currently under discussion with railway authorities, this ROB will provide an alternative link to emerging sectors along the expressway and ease pressure on the existing Basai ROB connecting Basai to Dhankot.
Additional Infrastructure Initiatives
The budget also includes provisions for enhancing basic infrastructure. A new 100 MLD water treatment plant, along with a three-day canal water storage facility, will be constructed at Basai Water Works at a cost of Rs 247 crore. Additionally, a sixth 100 MLD plant is planned at Chandu-Budhera Water Works for Rs 78 crore, addressing water supply needs in the growing city.
Future Traffic Management Projects
To further manage increasing traffic volumes, the government has proposed two major elevated corridors. An eight-lane, 5.1-km elevated corridor from NH8 to Vatika Chowk, including a cloverleaf interchange at Vatika Chowk, is estimated to cost Rs 1,065 crore. Another 8.84-km, eight-lane elevated stretch on the Southern Peripheral Road from Vatika Chowk to Ghata village is planned at Rs 1,846 crore. These projects aim to provide long-term solutions for Gurgaon's expanding road network.
