Guwahati Municipal Corporation Launches Multi-Faceted Community Programs
In anticipation of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's birthday, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has orchestrated a comprehensive series of community welfare initiatives. Spearheaded by its councillors and bolstered by support from various organizations, these programs aim to enhance urban living and foster civic engagement across the city.
Citywide Cleanliness Campaign "Clean Guwahati, Our Guwahati"
On Friday, a sweeping cleanliness drive was conducted at 120 locations throughout Guwahati, with a focus on two religious institutions in each ward. This campaign, under the slogan "Clean Guwahati, Our Guwahati," sought to instill a sense of civic responsibility and raise public awareness about hygiene.
GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania highlighted that statues of eminent personalities across the city were also cleaned as part of this effort. He emphasized that Chief Minister Sarma has consistently advocated for a clean, disciplined, and citizen-centric urban system. Sarania stated, "The cleanliness drive undertaken by GMC councillors on the occasion of the CM's birthday is not just a one-day activity, but the beginning of a mass movement." This initiative marks a step towards sustainable urban cleanliness practices.
Welfare and Entrepreneurial Support Programs
As part of the broader welfare agenda, the GMC has introduced measures to support local entrepreneurship. Marketing facilities under the Zoo Road flyover will be allocated to five self-help groups through the Udyamita Haat, which is funded by the women entrepreneurship scheme. This move aims to empower women entrepreneurs and stimulate local economic activity.
Green Guwahati Project: Planting for a Sustainable Future
In an environmental push, the Green Guwahati Project will see the planting of 1,000 neem saplings across 60 wards. This initiative not only promotes greenery but also includes an incentive: institutions where the saplings thrive will receive financial assistance of Rs 3 lakh after six months. This encourages community participation in maintaining and nurturing the planted saplings.
Banti Project: Enhancing Public Spaces with Lighting
Furthering the commitment to urban improvement, the Banti Project will install mini high mast lights in approximately 400 religious and social institutions. This initiative aims to enhance safety and accessibility in public spaces, contributing to a more secure and vibrant urban environment.
These coordinated efforts by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation reflect a holistic approach to urban development, combining cleanliness, environmental sustainability, economic support, and infrastructure enhancement. The programs are designed to leave a lasting impact on the city, aligning with the Chief Minister's vision for a progressive and responsible Assam.
