The Haryana higher education department's initiative to expand Vita milk booths across colleges and universities is encountering obstacles due to space limitations in several districts. Officials have reported that institutions operating from makeshift buildings in districts such as Gurgaon, Karnal, Sonipat, Hisar, and Ambala may struggle to allocate space for these booths. Similar concerns have been raised in Rewari, Kaithal, and Yamunanagar.
Objective of the Initiative
The program aims to improve students' access to affordable dairy products. It follows a meeting held in February 2026 to expand the presence of outlets managed by the Haryana Dairy Development Cooperative Federation Ltd on educational campuses.
Background and Implementation
Groundwork began in June 2025 when the department identified government and aided colleges for setting up these booths. In April 2026, institutions were directed to identify suitable sites and submit proposals. However, approximately 44 colleges across the state are currently functioning from makeshift buildings, complicating the search for appropriate space.
Some colleges, including Government College Faridabad and SD College Ambala, already have operational booths, and many others have formally consented to join the network. However, officials noted that some colleges have declined the proposal. For instance, Government College Ambala Cantt and Government College Ratia stated they already have canteens, while some rural colleges cited insufficient student numbers to make the project viable.
