Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Launches Women-Led Park Maintenance Initiative
The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has launched a groundbreaking community initiative. For the first time, the corporation has identified twelve public parks for maintenance by women self-help groups. This move marks a significant shift towards community-led upkeep of urban green spaces.
Programme Details and Financial Support
HDMC is implementing this initiative under the Amrut 2.0, Amrut Mitra programme. The corporation invited applications from eligible women self-help groups across Hubballi-Dharwad. Selected groups will receive substantial financial support for their efforts.
Each chosen SHG will get Rs 10 lakhs to maintain parks and playgrounds for one full year. Their responsibilities include keeping the parks clean, green, and well-maintained throughout this period.
Selected Parks and Community Impact
HDMC officials identified twelve specific parks for this programme. The list includes several popular public spaces:
- Chitaguppi Park
- MG Park
- Unkal Park
- Sadhankeri Park
- KC Park
The initiative aims to achieve multiple objectives simultaneously. It seeks to improve the quality of public parks while strengthening local participation in civic services. Women's groups will not only handle physical maintenance but also create awareness among residents about cleanliness and responsible public behavior.
Encouraging Response and Implementation Process
HDMC has already received applications from various interested groups. Officials expect more applications in the coming days. They view the current response as highly encouraging.
Arvind Jamakhandi, Head of Department for Day NULM, explained the programme's framework. "The Centre is implementing the Amrut Mitra phase-2 programme under the AMRUT scheme within HDMC limits," he stated. "The main objective involves implementing various technical and non-technical activities under AMRUT-2.0 through SHGs formed under the centrally sponsored Day-NULM campaign."
Eligibility requires SHGs to be registered under Day NULM with an MIS code. The selection process will begin soon. Selected groups will receive training and guidance from community affairs officers, community organizers, and mission managers.
Broader Implications and Future Potential
This programme reflects a growing focus on involving local communities in municipal functions. It combines livelihood support with civic improvement in a practical manner. Officials believe the initiative can significantly enhance public spaces while providing structured opportunities for women's groups to participate in city-level development.
If implemented effectively, this model could establish an important precedent. HDMC might expand similar partnerships to more parks and public areas across the twin cities. The approach represents an innovative blend of community empowerment and urban management that other municipalities could potentially replicate.
