Himachal Deputy CM Announces Major Water, Tourism & Transport Projects

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri of Himachal Pradesh made significant announcements on Wednesday regarding infrastructure development, focusing on water supply, tourism, and public transport. Presiding over the district-level Himachal Day function at the historic Ridge in Shimla, Agnihotri outlined multiple initiatives aimed at addressing long-term needs and boosting the state's economy.

Satluj River Water Supply Project

Agnihtori announced the launch of a drinking water supply scheme from the Satluj River, a ₹600-crore project designed to meet Shimla's capital requirements sustainably. The scheme currently provides 42 million litres per day (MLD), with the capacity to scale up to 67 MLD in the future. This expansion is expected to ensure a reliable water supply for the next 50 years, with completion targeted by June 2026.

In addition to this major project, Agnihotri highlighted efforts to combat water scarcity in drought-prone regions. A ₹325 crore water supply scheme is underway for areas like Matiyana and Theog in Shimla district, with ₹277 crore already spent. He also noted that work on the Kurpan Khad project is progressing rapidly, further enhancing water infrastructure.

Tourism and Infrastructure Enhancements

To improve infrastructure and boost tourism, several developments are in progress. Escalators have been installed at Jakhu Temple in Shimla to facilitate easier access for devotees. Other key projects include the Shimla Ropeway and underground cabling works, valued at ₹150 crore, which are advancing steadily. These initiatives aim to enhance visitor experience and support local economic growth.

Agnihtori also announced the launch of daily helicopter services from Sanjauli Helipad in Shimla to Bhuntar Airport in Kullu, Reckong Peo in Kinnaur, and Chandigarh. This service is expected to improve connectivity and attract more tourists to the region.

Public Transport and Financial Stability

Strengthening public transport is a priority, with plans to procure 1,000 new buses. This fleet will include diesel, electric, and mini buses to cater to diverse needs and promote sustainable travel options across the state.

Addressing the state's financial situation, Agnihotri acknowledged that past fiscal mismanagement led to an economic crisis, forcing the government to borrow even for loan repayments. However, he reported that the present administration has repaid ₹25,000 crore so far and is implementing firm measures to improve financial stability. These steps involve mobilizing resources and working towards making Himachal Pradesh self-reliant, ensuring a more secure economic future.
