The Chhattisgarh government on Saturday appointed 1992-batch IPS officer Arun Dev Gautam as the state's full-time director general of police (DGP). This decision brings an end to his tenure as acting police chief, which lasted nearly 17 months.
The appointment order was issued by Niharika Barik Singh, principal secretary of the home department.
Decorated Career
Arun Dev Gautam is a highly decorated officer. He has received the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service, the Indian Police Medal, and the United Nations Medal for his service in conflict-hit Kosovo.
Educational Background
Originally from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Gautam holds a Master of Arts in Political Science and an MPhil in International Law from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Service History
Gautam joined the IPS in 1992 and initially served in the undivided Madhya Pradesh cadre. After the formation of Chhattisgarh in 2000, he opted for the state's cadre.
Over the years, he has served as Superintendent of Police in several districts, including Koriya, Raigarh, Jashpur, Rajnandgaon, Sarguja, and Bilaspur. He also handled key assignments in Bastar following the 2013 Jhiram attack. His roles have included important postings in the Criminal Investigation Department, police headquarters, administration, and chief minister security.
Prior to being appointed acting DGP, Gautam served as home secretary and held additional charges of prisons, transport, home guards, and fire services.
