Scheme Launch and Coverage
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the launch of the Mukhyamantri Machhuara Samman Nidhi Yojana on July 26, 2026, in Shimla. The welfare scheme aims to provide financial assistance and social security to fishermen engaged in reservoir fisheries across Himachal Pradesh. Around 3,700 fishermen families from major reservoirs such as Gobind Sagar, Pong Dam, Kol Dam, Chamera, and Ranjit Sagar are expected to benefit. The state government will allocate approximately ₹1.20 crore annually for its implementation.
Financial Support During Fishing Ban
Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive Rs 3,500 annually during the closed fishing season. This period sees a suspension of fishing activities, leading to temporary livelihood loss for many families. The assistance is intended to help meet essential household needs and ensure livelihood security during the non-fishing season.
Eligibility and Application Process
The scheme covers active fishermen engaged in reservoir fisheries through registered Fisheries Cooperative Societies and holding valid fishing licences. Eligible fishermen must apply via their respective Fisheries Cooperative Societies and submit documents including a valid fishing licence, Aadhaar card, Parivar Register details, a valid NFDP registration number, and a society membership certificate. Applications will be scrutinised and verified by the Fisheries Cooperative Societies and Fisheries Department officials, with final approval from the Deputy Director Fisheries or Assistant Director Fisheries at the district level.
Government's Vision for Sustainable Fisheries
Chief Minister Sukhu stated that the initiative was introduced to support families dependent on reservoir fisheries during the annual fishing ban. Besides providing immediate financial relief, the scheme aims to encourage sustainable fisheries management and support genuine fishermen contributing to the state's fisheries sector. The government sees this as a step towards social security for a vulnerable community.
