Hubballi-Dharwad Deploys Teams to Maintain 1,300+ Borewells

Hubballi-Dharwad Authorities Mobilize Special Teams to Secure Summer Water Supply Through Extensive Borewell Network

In a proactive move to address the escalating demand for drinking water during the scorching summer months, the authorities in Hubballi-Dharwad have deployed specialized teams to manage and maintain the twin cities' extensive borewell infrastructure. This strategic initiative focuses on ensuring a steady and reliable water supply, particularly in areas where traditional sources are under stress.

Exclusive Teams Formed for Borewell Management and Rapid Response

The Hubballi-Dharwad municipal corporation has established exclusive teams, each consisting of six members, dedicated to the oversight of more than 1,300 borewells. These borewells include both power pumps and hand pumps, forming a critical component of the water supply network. Officials are heavily reliant on this borewell system to meet the heightened summer demand, as conventional water sources face increased pressure.

The primary responsibilities of these teams encompass routine inspections, immediate minor repairs, and coordination for larger maintenance needs. Their deployment is specifically designed to minimize downtime and ensure that borewells remain fully functional. This is especially vital in localities where residents depend on borewells as their primary source of drinking water, bridging gaps until river water supply coverage is enhanced.

Focus on Unserved and Partially Served Areas Dependent on Borewells

Borewell-based water supply is concentrated mainly in unserved and partially served regions where River Malaprabha's water has not yet been extended. In these areas, officials are prioritizing the operational status of borewells to prevent water shortages. The Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) is actively monitoring the condition of these borewells, conducting thorough field-level reviews to assess their functionality.

These assessments involve identifying non-functional units, evaluating mechanical issues, and verifying the adequacy of pumps, electrical connections, and discharge levels to meet local requirements. Based on these evaluations, KUIDFC has issued directives to maintain all borewells in proper working order and to prioritize repairs wherever supply disruptions are reported, ensuring communities are not left without essential water for prolonged periods.

Immediate Complaint Resolution and Enhanced Summer Preparedness

To further bolster the response mechanism, L&T staff have been instructed to address complaints related to borewells without delay. This includes issues such as pump failure, low yield, damaged components, or non-operational hand pumps. The emphasis is on swift action to prevent extended water shortages, as confirmed by sources within KUIDFC.

With summer conditions intensifying, authorities are taking extra precautions to prevent breakdowns, maintain continuity, and respond rapidly to emerging issues. Savita Katigennavar, Superintending Engineer at KUIDFC, provided detailed insights: "Out of a total of over 1,900 borewells, approximately 1,320 are currently in working condition. To ensure continuous operation, we have formed two special teams in Hubballi and one in Dharwad. These expert teams, working directly under L&T, will act immediately based on complaints to address any issues that hamper borewell functionality."

This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment of Hubballi-Dharwad authorities to safeguard drinking water supply through meticulous borewell management, leveraging specialized teams and robust monitoring systems to mitigate the challenges posed by summer demand and infrastructure stress.
