Hyderabad Police Commissioner Outlines Advanced Tech and Enforcement Strategies
In a comprehensive response to queries from the public, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has announced a series of initiatives leveraging advanced technologies and intensified enforcement to address key urban challenges. The plans focus on traffic management, cyber fraud, drug menace, and public safety, reflecting a proactive approach to modern policing.
AI-Driven Traffic Monitoring and Control Systems
Commissioner Sajjanar confirmed that Hyderabad is moving towards an AI-controlled traffic monitoring and control system. Traffic signals, managed by civic authorities, are set for an upgrade through a new tender that will incorporate AI-based technologies. On the enforcement front, a pilot project at the MJ Market junction has successfully tested AI for violation validation and challan generation, with encouraging results. Tenders have been floated for advanced electronic enforcement equipment, and the upgraded system is expected to be implemented soon.
To tackle issues like erratic parking and footpath encroachments, the Hyderabad Traffic Police has launched "ROPE – Removal of Obstructive Parking and Encroachments," a special enforcement drive conducted regularly. Permanent encroachments fall under civic jurisdiction, but joint drives ensure coordinated action for smoother traffic flow.
Enhancing Lane Discipline and Curbing Traffic Violations
The police are upgrading the electronic enforcement system to strengthen lane discipline, though uniform road stretches are limited in some areas. A pilot project for lane-discipline enforcement will be introduced on select stretches before citywide expansion. For wrong-side driving, a recent special drive booked 21,713 cases, with offenders required to attend compulsory counselling sessions. An exclusive electronic enforcement system for automatic detection is being installed at identified hotspots.
To address illegal bike racing and noise pollution, speed laser guns monitor over-speeding in vulnerable areas, and intensified enforcement targets racing hotspots. Illegally modified silencers are seized and destroyed to curb noise pollution.
Strengthening Cyber Fraud Response and Public Awareness
Cyber fraud remains a significant concern, with the police strengthening their response through rapid reporting systems, bank coordination, and specialised units. Victims are advised to immediately call the helpline 1930 during the "golden hour" to freeze transactions. For cross-border cases, inter-state coordination and Look Out Circulars are activated.
Senior citizens and other vulnerable groups are protected through outreach initiatives like ‘Jagrut Hyderabad – Surakshit Hyderabad,’ door-to-door cyber awareness programmes, and WhatsApp-based alerts. Citizens are urged to verify investment schemes with regulatory bodies like RBI or SEBI and avoid apps promising high returns.
Drug Enforcement and Public Safety Measures
The Hyderabad City Police strategy combines awareness programmes in schools and colleges with strict enforcement against drug supply. Surveillance on known offenders, inspections at pubs and bars, and deportation of foreign nationals involved in peddling are key measures. Around 40 such individuals have been deported and blacklisted.
For women's safety, SHE Teams operate round the clock with patrols at vulnerable locations. QR codes on autorickshaws enable quick reporting, and the average response time for Dial 100 calls is about five minutes. Delays are reviewed and corrected promptly.
Addressing Social Issues and Digital Crimes
In 2025, five cases of alleged extortion by transgenders were reported. The police are working with the Telangana government to create sustainable livelihood opportunities, such as engaging transgender persons as traffic marshals, to address such issues.
For digital blackmail and sextortion, victims are advised to preserve evidence, report on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, and call 1930. The police handle complaints with sensitivity, offering confidential counselling. In 2025, 366 digital blackmail complaints were reported, with 32 arrests made and approximately 16% of defrauded amounts recovered.
Traffic Regulation and Compliance Monitoring
Commissioner Sajjanar clarified that nearly 90% of the Traffic Police force is deployed for on-ground traffic regulation, with contact and non-contact enforcement during non-peak hours. For illegal pubs and hookah centres, compliance is monitored through licences, and violations face legal action, including licence cancellation. Citizens can report issues via Dial 100 or WhatsApp.
Overall, these measures underscore Hyderabad Police's commitment to leveraging technology and enforcement for a safer, more orderly city.
