Kanyakumari: The International Fishermen Development Trust (INFIDET) has urged Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to implement systemic changes to protect the lives and livelihoods of the fishing community. INFIDET president P Justin Antony emphasized the need for a National Integrated Fisheries Policy to address long-standing grievances faced by fishermen.
Amendment to Section 108 of Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam
Antony pointed out that Section 108 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, which presumes a missing person dead only after seven years, leaves families of fishermen lost at sea without timely relief. He sought an amendment to the act to reduce this period, ensuring families receive compensation and support sooner.
Preventing Mid-Sea Collisions
To prevent frequent mid-sea collisions, INFIDET suggested establishing a special shipping route to ensure large vessels do not encroach on traditional fishing grounds. This measure aims to reduce accidents and protect fishing equipment.
Maritime Violence and Emergency Response
To address the rising threat of maritime violence, Antony called for the formation of a special anti-piracy force to curb attacks and equipment theft at sea. He also urged the government to station a dedicated sea ambulance and helicopter in Kanyakumari for emergency responses, ensuring timely medical aid for injured fishermen.
Socio-Economic Upliftment
The trust also sought long-term socio-economic upliftment by prioritizing students from the fishing community in fisheries and shipping-related courses. This would create more opportunities for younger generations and reduce dependency on risky fishing practices.
