Jaipur PWD Initiates Underground Parking Project at State Secretariat

The Public Works Department (PWD) in Jaipur has announced a significant infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing parking facilities within the state Secretariat complex. This initiative involves the development of an underground parking facility beneath the garden area, specifically designed to ease the persistent traffic issues on Bhagwan Das Marg.

Project Details and Timeline

According to a senior PWD official, the department has already issued the work order for this project, with a strict deadline set for completion by September 2026. The official emphasized that the work will proceed at a rapid pace, following direct instructions from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) and PWD Minister Diya Kumari.

The project is budgeted at Rs 5.42 crore and is based on a comprehensive third-party physical audit report. Its primary objectives include:

  • Increasing the overall parking capacity within the Secretariat complex.
  • Permanently resolving long-standing water leakage problems in the existing two-storey basement parking located below the front lawn.

Addressing Structural Issues

A PWD engineer explained that the existing parking facility, which currently accommodates 550 four-wheelers, has been plagued by water leakage from expansion joints. This issue has led to the rusting of iron rods in beams, columns, and pillars, ultimately weakening the cement and concrete joints due to the age of the previous construction.

Upon completion, the renovated underground parking facility will provide space for 450 four-wheelers, offering a modernized and structurally sound solution to the parking and leakage challenges.

Additional Parking Developments

In parallel with this project, the PWD is also constructing a three-storey underground parking structure below the North Block of the Secretariat. This additional facility is expected to accommodate 268 vehicles and is slated for completion by June 2026, further boosting the overall parking capacity within the complex.

These combined efforts underscore the government's commitment to improving urban infrastructure, reducing traffic congestion, and ensuring efficient parking solutions for the Secretariat and its surroundings.
