Jharkhand Urban Bodies Directed to Ensure Uninterrupted Water Supply in Summer
The Urban Development and Housing Department (UDHD) of Jharkhand has issued directives to all urban local bodies in the state to guarantee uninterrupted drinking water supply throughout the summer season. The department also emphasized the need to intensify sanitation and waste management efforts across cities. These instructions were given during a review meeting of urban bodies and JUIDCO projects chaired by UDHD principal secretary Sunil Kumar in Ranchi.
Officials were tasked with identifying areas that still lack piped water supply coverage and preparing proposals for the expansion of water towers and water sources. Urban bodies were also instructed to repair defunct hand pumps and closely monitor drinking water schemes during the peak summer months. The department stressed the importance of proactive measures to prevent water shortages.
In terms of civic infrastructure, the department asked municipal bodies without bus stands to submit proposals for new facilities. Cities requiring renovation of existing bus stands or inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs) were directed to send detailed plans. Additionally, proposals for road widening, multipurpose halls, and community buildings were sought as part of broader urban infrastructure planning.
On the sanitation front, the department directed urban bodies to strengthen door-to-door garbage collection and monitor the transportation of waste to dumping yards. Officials were instructed to ensure proper segregation of waste and take action against agencies that fail to perform satisfactorily. The department emphasized that cleanliness is a priority for urban governance.
Sunil Kumar stated that urban local bodies should improve revenue collection through holding tax and user charges to become financially sustainable. He said, "Public and private institutions that are not paying holding tax should be identified and coordinated with to improve recovery." This step is aimed at enhancing the financial health of municipalities.
The department also directed officials to take action, including debarment and termination, against agencies that fail to properly execute drinking water and other civic infrastructure projects. This review underscored the department's focus on summer preparedness, civic service delivery, and stronger accountability in urban governance. Emphasis was placed on both immediate public needs and long-term infrastructure improvement across Jharkhand's towns and cities.
