A letter signed by 607 residents of the Jadavpur University campus, including teachers, non-teaching staff, and scholars, was submitted to the JU registrar. The letter demands immediate measures to control the dog population on campus amid a worrying increase in dog bite incidents.
Eight Demands Presented to Registrar
The campus residents put forward eight demands to the registrar. These include sterilization and vaccination of all campus dogs, along with maintaining a schedule for these procedures. Additionally, they demand that the university take full responsibility and bear all medical expenses for individuals bitten by campus dogs. Another key demand is to secure residential zones, quarters, and hostels with proper fencing, iron nets, gates, and round-the-clock security personnel to keep stray dogs away.
Residents Express Concerns
A professor residing in the quarters stated, "Since residents use gates 4 and 5 for entry and exit, dogs should not be allowed to roam freely in that zone." A staff member added, "The administration is reluctant to enforce any measure, but we urge them to take steps on a war footing."
The situation has become alarming, with many residents fearing for their safety. The university administration is yet to respond officially to the demands.
