Kanpur Mayor Finds Drains Only 25% Desilted

Kanpur: The Kanpur Municipal Corporation's claims regarding the desilting of drains and nullahs ahead of the monsoon came under scrutiny on Thursday, when Mayor Pramila Pandey inspected Ward No. 1 in Zone-1 and found several stretches inadequately cleaned.

During the inspection, she observed that in several locations only around 25 per cent of the desilting work had been completed, contrary to the progress reports presented by officials. Expressing dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work, the mayor directed officials to ensure proper desilting of all drains and nullahs to prevent waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season.

She also appealed to residents to remove encroachments over drains and nullahs, saying such obstructions hinder cleaning operations and affect the flow of rainwater.

The inspection comes just two days after the mayor chaired a meeting to review monsoon preparedness and the status of desilting work across the city. During the meeting, officials had claimed that desilting had already been completed in several nullahs and was progressing rapidly in others, with all work expected to be finished before the onset of the monsoon.
