On Sunday, strong winds swept through Kanpur, causing significant disruptions to the power supply across several key areas of the city. The affected neighborhoods included Pandu Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Double Puliya, Faithfulganj, and Rail Bazar, where residents were left in darkness for several hours. This incident has cast a harsh light on the Smart City claims promoted by local authorities, exposing vulnerabilities in the urban infrastructure.
Residents Voice Frustration Over Civic Collapse
Prem Chauhan, a resident of Shivaji Nagar, expressed his dismay, stating, "Rain and storms cause the entire civic infrastructure to collapse, leaving residents without power and water." Similarly, Sudhir Singh from Pandu Nagar highlighted the irony of the situation, noting, "After Lucknow, Kanpur has been showcased as one of the best cities in terms of infrastructure and amenities, but the rain and storm on Sunday exposed the reality of these claims." These comments underscore a growing public dissatisfaction with the gap between official promises and on-ground realities.
Infrastructure Failures and Backup System Negligence
Atul Seth, the senior vice president of the Provincial Industries Association, provided insight into the technical shortcomings. He explained, "There are two incoming sources of power—one overhead and one underground—at most substations so that if one fails, the other can immediately serve as a backup. However, the unfortunate aspect of our working style is that when one source suffices, the malfunction of the other is ignored. Today's situation seems to be a glaring example of that negligence." This revelation points to systemic issues in maintenance and preparedness, which have left the city vulnerable to such disruptions.
The power outages not only inconvenienced residents but also raised broader questions about the effectiveness of Kanpur's Smart City initiatives.
