Kanpur Thunderstorm Brings Relief, Causes Waterlogging

Kanpur experienced a pre-monsoon thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall on Saturday morning, providing significant relief from the intense heat and creating pleasant weather conditions until noon.

Temperature Drop and Humidity

According to weather data, the maximum temperature dropped to 34.2 degrees Celsius compared to Friday's 37.3 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 26.1 degrees Celsius. The rainfall pushed maximum relative humidity to 98 percent, causing discomfort during the noon and afternoon hours. However, south-eastern winds blowing at speeds between 7.5 kmph and 23.4 kmph provided some respite to residents during the daytime.

Sequence of Weather Events

The weather changed early in the morning when western winds indicated the possibility of a dust storm. Soon, dark clouds covered the sky, and drizzling accompanied by thunderstorm activity began around 6:15 am. Within minutes, the drizzle turned into heavy rainfall that continued for over 40 minutes. By around 9 am, the sky cleared, and bright sunshine returned.

Impact on City Infrastructure

The rainfall led to severe waterlogging in several low-lying areas of the city. Many roads turned into virtual canals, disrupting vehicular movement across different localities. Thunderstorm activity also uprooted trees at several places, affecting traffic flow. According to observatories, the maximum rainfall in the city was recorded as 42 mm by the Air Force, while other places recorded between 38.5 mm and 39.2 mm.

Forecast by India Meteorological Department

The India Meteorological Department has forecast bright sunshine, intense heat, and partly cloudy skies across all six districts of the Kanpur division over the next 24 hours. The department stated that maximum temperatures in most districts are likely to range between 39 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures may remain between 27 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius. The possibility of dust storms or light drizzle accompanied by thunderstorms during night hours has also been predicted in some areas.

Expert Opinion

Weather expert Dr. S Sunil Pandey said that due to atmospheric moisture, light rain or showers accompanied by strong winds and thundercloud activity are likely in the Kanpur division from late night through Sunday morning and may continue over the coming days.

Disruption and Waterlogging

Heavy rainfall disrupted traffic movement, exposing the tall claims of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation regarding desilting of drains and nullahs. The downpour also disrupted power supply in some localities. Waterlogging was reported from Yashoda Nagar, Barra, Shastri Nagar, Govind Nagar Kachchi Basti, parts of Nawabganj, and several other low-lying localities. In Ward 29, rainwater entered several houses after lanes and roads were submerged. Residents alleged that poor drainage arrangements led to the flooding.
