Kanpur Launches Innovative Zonal QR Code System for E-Rickshaws and E-Autos
In a significant move to address urban mobility challenges, Kanpur has rolled out a new zonal traffic management system specifically targeting the city's fleet of approximately 65,000 e-rickshaws and e-autos. Effective from February 10, this initiative restricts vehicle owners to operating solely within designated zones near their residential areas, aiming to streamline traffic flow and enhance overall road safety.
Division into Seven Zones and QR Code Implementation
The district has been meticulously divided into seven distinct zones, each aligned with police station jurisdictions. To facilitate this system, coloured QR codes have been issued to all eligible e-rickshaws and e-autos, with each zone featuring a unique code. These QR codes were distributed free of charge from the traffic office until the implementation date, requiring vehicle owners to present five essential documents for verification: registration papers, insurance details, Aadhaar card, driving licence, and fitness certificate. Notably, even those with previously issued QR codes were mandated to obtain the new zone-specific versions to ensure compliance.
Strict Enforcement and Penalties for Violations
Authorities have emphasized stringent enforcement measures to uphold the zonal restrictions. According to Rajesh Pandey, ADCP Traffic, vehicles found operating outside their designated zones after February 10 will face severe consequences, including challans and potential seizure. This crackdown extends to vehicles lacking QR codes altogether, with officials pledging strict action to deter non-compliance and maintain order on Kanpur's bustling streets.
Expected Benefits and Enhanced Passenger Safety
Officials project that this system will yield multiple benefits, such as improved traffic flow, relief from chronic congestion, and a reduction in accidents. Beyond traffic management, the QR codes serve as a tool for passenger safety. Traffic department officials highlighted past incidents where e-rickshaw drivers misbehaved or passengers reported missing belongings. To mitigate such risks, passengers are advised to scan the QR codes before boarding, providing them with complete information about the vehicle owner and fostering a safer travel environment.
This comprehensive approach not only aims to regulate the operations of e-rickshaws and e-autos but also represents a proactive step towards modernizing Kanpur's urban transport infrastructure, balancing efficiency with security for all road users.
