Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has directed the state's higher education department to take necessary steps to ensure the continuation of the undergraduate talent scheme for a few more years. The directive was issued during a review meeting held on Monday, where the CM emphasized the scheme's role in nurturing young talent and providing opportunities for students across the state.
Scheme's impact and future
The undergraduate talent scheme, launched in 2024, has benefited over 5,000 students annually by providing financial support and mentorship. According to officials, the scheme has a budget allocation of Rs 50 crore per year. "This scheme is crucial for identifying and supporting bright students from underprivileged backgrounds," Shivakumar said during the meeting. He instructed the department to explore funding options and streamline the application process to reach more students.
Implementation challenges
Higher education department officials highlighted challenges such as limited outreach and delayed disbursement of funds. The CM directed them to resolve these issues promptly and ensure timely release of scholarships. "We must ensure that no deserving student misses out due to administrative hurdles," he added. The department is expected to submit a detailed proposal for the scheme's extension within a month.
