Karnataka Achieves National Leadership in Gram Panchayat Tax Collection

In a significant development for rural governance, Karnataka has been recognized as the top-performing state in India for tax collection across its 5,943 gram panchayats. This achievement highlights a substantial improvement in revenue generation compared to previous years, marking a milestone in local administration efficiency.

Record-Breaking Revenue Figures Announced

According to Priyank Kharge, Minister for Rural Development & Panchayat Raj and IT, BT, the state has demonstrated exceptional performance in tax collection and revenue consolidation. The financial year 2024-25 saw gram panchayats collect Rs 1,272.5 crore in taxes for the first time in the department's history, with 80% of the current demand being met.

The following year, 2025-26, witnessed an even more impressive surge, with collections reaching Rs 1,382.5 crore. This represents an excess of Rs 110 crore compared to the previous year, with a remarkable 89% of the current year's demand successfully collected. Strategic Initiatives Driving Success

The record tax collection has been achieved through comprehensive publicity programs and sustained efforts via targeted tax collection campaigns. Minister Kharge extended congratulations to the dedicated team of employees and officials, emphasizing that this outcome resulted from the hard work of all officers, starting from the gram panchayat bill collectors.

"Since our government came to power, there has been a consistent upswing in fund collection over the last three years," stated Priyank Kharge. "Every rupee collected is being reinvested into public works, improved services, and local development in villages. This marks the beginning of comprehensive progress in rural areas."

District-Level Performance Highlights

Further underscoring the state's success, 11 districts in Karnataka have taken the lead by collecting more than 100% of their tax targets. This exceptional performance at the district level reflects widespread compliance and effective implementation of tax policies across the state.

The minister's remarks, made during an interview, confirm that Karnataka's approach to rural tax administration has set a new benchmark for other states to follow. The focus on reinvesting collected funds into local development ensures that the financial gains directly benefit village communities, fostering sustainable growth and enhanced public services.
