Karnataka Voter Verification After 24 Years Starts June 20

BENGALURU: More than 5.55 crore voters in Karnataka will undergo a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a voter verification exercise under the Election Commission of India (ECI), starting June 20. The door-to-door enumeration will take place from June 30 to July 29. This is the first such exercise in the state in 24 years, with Karnataka's last intensive revision dating back to 2002.

Phase Three of Nationwide Exercise

Karnataka has been included in Phase three of the nationwide exercise, alongside Maharashtra, Delhi, Jharkhand, and Meghalaya. The final electoral roll is slated for publication on October 7 this year.

Detailed Schedule

As per the ECI schedule, Karnataka's SIR process will begin with preparation and training between June 20 and June 29. The door-to-door enumeration follows until July 29. The draft electoral rolls will be published on August 5. Voters will have a month to file claims and objections until September 4. The objections will be examined, and notices will be issued where discrepancies arise. The final roll will be released on October 7.

Purpose of the Exercise

The exercise, usually conducted close to elections to ensure a voter list devoid of deceased persons and duplicate voters, and to add new voters, is being taken up in advance. Karnataka will only go to state elections in 2028.

Aadhaar Not Proof of Citizenship

The EC has separately clarified that Aadhaar may be accepted as proof of identity but not as proof of citizenship.
