Indigenous Kavach System Commissioned on Vital Prayagraj-Kanpur Rail Corridor
The North Central Railway (NCR) achieved a significant technological milestone on Sunday by commissioning the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system on the crucial Prayagraj (excluding)-Kanpur (excluding) section. This deployment covers an extensive 190 route kilometers of one of Indian Railways' busiest corridors.
Enabling Higher Speed Operations
This implementation represents a key advancement that will facilitate train operations at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour. The system was inaugurated using the Sangam Express, with North Central Railway General Manager NP Singh conducting a thorough inspection between Subedarganj and Manauri stations.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by principal heads of departments, the divisional railway manager of Prayagraj, and numerous headquarters and divisional officers who witnessed this technological leap forward.
Initial Operational Phase
In the first phase of implementation, the Kavach system will become operational on eight pairs of trains:
- Subedarganj-Dehradun Express
- Subedarganj-Meerut City Sangam Express
- Howrah-Jodhpur Superfast Express
- Prayagraj-New Delhi Humsafar Express
- Prayagraj-Anand Vihar Terminal Humsafar Express
- Chauri Chaura Express
- Subedarganj-Katra
- Prayagraj-Jaipur Superfast Express
Railway officials confirmed that additional trains, including Vande Bharat services, will be progressively integrated into the Kavach system in subsequent phases.
Team Effort and Future Expansion
North Central Railway officials attributed this achievement to the dedicated efforts of the Signal and Telecommunication team, which was led by Principal Chief Signal and Telecommunication Engineer Satendra Kumar. Their expertise and commitment were instrumental in successfully implementing this sophisticated safety system.
According to Senior Public Relations Officer Amit Malviya of North Central Railway, the next phase of expansion will see the Kavach system extended to the Ghaziabad-Tundla section as part of Mission Raftaar. This strategic initiative aims to enhance railway safety and operational efficiency across the network.
The indigenous Kavach system represents a major step forward in railway safety technology, providing automatic train protection that can prevent collisions and overspeeding incidents. Its deployment on this vital corridor demonstrates Indian Railways' commitment to implementing advanced safety measures while supporting increased operational speeds.
