Kochi: District collector G Priyanka has instructed that land transfer procedures be urgently completed to expedite the construction of material collection facilities (MCFs) across the district. The collector directed officials to remove all obstacles hindering the establishment of MCFs in local self-government institutions and to finish the work within a specified timeframe.
Efficient Resource Recovery Facilities
Along with MCFs, the operation of resource recovery facilities (RRFs) will be made more efficient to sort and send inorganic waste for processing. The collector emphasized the need to streamline RRF operations to enhance waste segregation and recycling efforts.
Government Land for Panchayats
Steps will be taken to provide government land to panchayats that have not yet identified suitable land for MCFs. This move aims to ensure that all local bodies have the necessary infrastructure for waste collection and processing.
Sanitary Landfill Facilities
The meeting also discussed the establishment of sanitary landfill facilities for scientific waste processing. Proper landfill sites are crucial for environmentally sound disposal of residual waste.
Regular Reviews and Transparency
The collector instructed that waste management reviews be conducted at regular intervals to assess the progress of waste processing activities in the district. Additionally, the operation of the 'Harithamithram' smart garbage app will be expanded to make waste collection and processing more transparent, Priyanka said.

The review meeting, held in the district collector's chamber, was attended by officials from the revenue department, local self-government departments, and the Sanitation Mission.
