Kochi Residents Demand SA Road Extension to Alleviate Tripunithura Traffic Crisis

In Kochi, the persistent and "undue delay" in critical road projects is increasingly strangling the development of Tripunithura and its surrounding regions. Frustrated locals, spearheaded by the Tripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents' Association (Trura), are now mounting a vigorous campaign for the extension of the Seaport-Airport (SA) Road to Puthiyakavu as a vital solution to the area's mounting infrastructure woes.

Current Congestion and Stalled Projects

The SA Road currently comes to an abrupt halt at Karingachira, creating severe traffic bottlenecks at this junction, especially during peak hours. This dead-end situation exacerbates the already critical congestion plaguing the region.

Compounding the problem is the stalled progress on the widening of the Karingachira-Thiruvankulam stretch, which is part of National Highway 85. Although this project has received administrative sanctions amounting to approximately Rs 42 crore, its advancement is completely paralyzed by ongoing litigation, leaving the community in a state of limbo.

The Proposed Extension: A Strategic Bypass

In response to this stagnation, which is severely hampering regional growth, Trura has put forward a detailed resolution plan. The core proposal involves extending the SA Road southward through currently vacant paddy fields to reach Puthiyakavu.

"By extending SA Road southward through vacant paddy fields to Puthiyakavu, the network could strategically intersect with the proposed Karayamparambu-Nettoor NH bypass," explained Trura secretary V C Jayendran, outlining the plan's first major benefit.

According to Jayendran, this extension unlocks two transformative possibilities for the region's connectivity:

  1. Strategic NH Integration: It would provide crucial connectivity by integrating with the proposed NH bypass, effectively streamlining the flow of heavy traffic away from congested local arteries.
  2. Eastern Region Bypass: If the road is extended a mere additional 3 kilometers to link with the Puthiyakavu-Kureekad-Chottanikkara Road, it would create a vital bypass for the eastern regions, including Kandanad, Mulanthuruthy, and Piravom.

Background of the SA Road Project

The original vision for the SA Road project was to establish a direct link between Cochin Port on Willingdon Island and Kochi International Airport in Nedumbassery. The first phase, a 11.3-kilometer stretch from Irumpanam to Kalamassery, was completed and opened to traffic back in 2003.

The long-awaited Phase II, which would connect Kalamassery to the airport, is only now being taken up for implementation after being entangled in over two decades of land acquisition hurdles, highlighting the chronic delays affecting infrastructure in the area.

Parallel Stagnation on Kaniyampuzha Road

Parallel to the SA Road issues is the neglected state of Kaniyampuzha Road. Despite a sanction of Rs 10 crore in 2021 for widening the stretch from Vyttila through Mathur and Labour Junction to Traco Cables, the road remains narrow and utterly inadequate for current traffic demands.

"This route is the shortest path from Vyttila to Irumpanam and runs parallel to the Water Metro corridor. Furthermore, given the strategic importance of Kaniyampuzha Road to industrial safety, the government should actively explore Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding from major entities like BPCL," Jayendran pointed out, suggesting an alternative financing model to break the deadlock on this crucial artery.

The collective demand from Tripunithura residents underscores a critical juncture for Kochi's infrastructure planning, where community-led proposals are seeking to bypass bureaucratic and legal gridlocks to unlock sustainable development and relieve chronic traffic congestion.
