Delhi LG Directs DDA to Position Dwarka as Premier Global Events Destination

In a significant move to boost Delhi's international profile, Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has issued clear directives to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to actively promote Dwarka sub-city as a vibrant hub for international events, business engagements, and cultural activities. The initiative capitalizes on Dwarka's strategic geographical advantages and rapidly expanding infrastructure portfolio.

Comprehensive Review of Key Dwarka Projects

During an extensive review conducted on Wednesday, LG Sandhu examined multiple high-profile projects currently underway in Dwarka. The inspection covered critical infrastructure including storm water channels No. 2 and 5, the ambitious golf course development at Sector-24, the five-star hotel project at Sector-23, the upcoming Bharat Vandana Park, and the state-of-the-art Yashobhoomi Convention Centre.

Highlighting Dwarka's unique advantages, Sandhu emphasized the area's exceptional connectivity through the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), its close proximity to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, and the presence of world-class facilities like Yashobhoomi. He articulated a clear vision for Dwarka to emerge as a premier destination for global engagements across multiple sectors.

Developing a Strategic Roadmap for International Positioning

"A comprehensive and time-bound roadmap must be developed to strategically position these locations as vibrant centers for international conventions, major exhibitions, cultural festivals, and high-level business summits," stated Sandhu during the review. He further instructed DDA officials to actively invite multinational corporations, global institutions, and foreign embassies to organize their flagship events in Dwarka.

The LG's vision extends beyond mere infrastructure development to creating a holistic ecosystem that attracts global attention and investment to the national capital region.

Urban Transformation Through Green Infrastructure

During the detailed project review, DDA officials highlighted the transformative nature of storm water channels No. 2 and 5. These projects represent innovative urban renewal initiatives that convert critical drainage infrastructure into green recreational corridors featuring dedicated cycling tracks, pedestrian walkways, public plazas, solar energy installations, and various community amenities.

Simultaneously, these projects will significantly strengthen sewage treatment capabilities and pollution abatement systems, addressing both recreational and environmental needs of the growing sub-city.

Hospitality and Commercial Infrastructure Development

The review also covered the five-star hotel project in Sector-23, which is being developed under an annual licence fee model. The selected bidder will undertake complete responsibility for developing, building, financing, operating, and eventually transferring the hotel, which is mandated to have a minimum of 200 lettable rooms to cater to international visitors.

At Sector-26, Sandhu inspected proposed sites for establishing an Information Technology and IT-enabled services hub along UER-II (Part-D), strategically located near the upcoming ICC Metro Station. This development aims to create a technology corridor within the events hub.

Leveraging Convention Facilities for Large-Scale Events

A key focus area was assessing the immense potential of the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre and its surrounding areas for hosting large-scale national and international events. The facility's modern infrastructure and capacity make it ideal for major conventions and exhibitions that require world-class amenities.

DDA officials confirmed that the LG has directed them to prepare a holistic, time-bound action plan that effectively leverages Dwarka's strategic location and infrastructure advantages. The plan specifically includes active engagement with corporate entities, diplomatic missions, and various stakeholders to attract conventions, film festivals, exhibitions, and cultural programmes.

Sports Infrastructure as Part of Holistic Development

In the final segment of his visit, Sandhu inspected the golf course at Sector-24, which stands as one of India's longest public golf facilities. The championship-grade course features an 18-hole layout, six short holes, and the country's longest driving range.

Designed as an international-quality, pay-and-play sporting destination, this project aims to promote sports culture and nurture young golfing talent while adding to Dwarka's appeal as a comprehensive destination for international visitors and events.

The comprehensive review and subsequent directives mark a strategic push to transform Dwarka from a residential sub-city into a dynamic global hub that can host world-class events while driving economic growth and international visibility for Delhi.
