Lucknow's Dark Streets Spark Safety Fears as Faulty Lights Persist for Weeks
Defunct and faulty street lights on several busy roads in Lucknow have ignited significant safety concerns among daily commuters. As numerous stretches remain poorly illuminated after sunset, residents report that the problem has persisted for weeks, despite repeated complaints lodged with municipal authorities.
Key Heritage and University Zones Plunged into Darkness
Critical locations near the city's heritage zone, including Khun-Khunji Road in Chowk, Old and New Pakka Pul, and several areas surrounding Lucknow University, have been found to be inadequately lit during nighttime hours. Residents have highlighted multiple dark spots at important junctions, which substantially increase the risk of both traffic accidents and criminal activities.
The absence of consistent, proper lighting has made daily commuting a challenging and hazardous endeavor for many. "Many street lights either remain completely switched off or flicker intermittently for a few minutes before going permanently dark on the stretch between Old and New Pucca Pul. It becomes exceptionally risky to travel through these areas at night," explained Mohammad Arif, a local shopkeeper operating in the Chowk area.
Student and Women Commuters Voice Heightened Vulnerability
Students from Lucknow University have expressed grave concerns regarding their safety. "We frequently have evening classes and coaching sessions. Walking back to our hostels along these dark, unlit stretches feels profoundly unsafe, a concern that is particularly acute for female students," stated Shreya Singh, a postgraduate student at the university.
Women commuters across the city emphasized that poorly lit roads significantly amplify their sense of vulnerability during travel. "Dark roads make it deeply uncomfortable and anxiety-inducing to travel alone after dusk. Proper, reliable lighting is not just a convenience; it is essential for public safety and acts as a crucial deterrent against anti-social elements," remarked a local working professional who preferred to remain anonymous.
Municipal Authority's Response and Pledged Action
In response to the growing outcry, Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) Chief Engineer Manoj Prabhat has acknowledged the issue. He confirmed that complaints from affected residents and commuters are currently being systematically compiled. Maintenance teams are slated to be dispatched promptly to identify all faulty lighting infrastructure and execute necessary repairs, according to the official statement.
The situation underscores a pressing urban infrastructure challenge, where delayed maintenance of public amenities like street lighting directly impacts citizen security and quality of life, demanding swift and effective intervention from the city's administration.
