Ludhiana Activist Raises Alarm Over Municipal Corporation's Outdated Website
A city-based activist in Ludhiana has voiced serious concerns regarding the official website of the Municipal Corporation (MC), alleging that it suffers from a chronic lack of regular updates. This negligence, he asserts, is creating significant hurdles for residents who rely on the portal for accurate and timely information.
Allegations of Information Negligence
The activist, Kuldeep Singh Khaira, has pointed out that the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (LMC) portal frequently fails to display current data. Key areas of concern include outdated names and contact details for officers, dealing staff, and the crucial lists of designated Public Information Officers (PIOs) and First Appellate Authorities (FAAs).
According to Khaira, this oversight directly impedes citizens attempting to access reliable information or exercise their statutory rights under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. "This negligence causes unnecessary hurdles," he stated, emphasizing that it undermines public access and administrative transparency.
Demands for Immediate Action and Systemic Reform
Khaira has called upon the authorities to issue strict instructions to the IT wing, mandating timely website maintenance. His specific demands include:
- Prominently displaying updated designations and contact details of personnel in critical posts.
- Maintaining the list of PIOs and FAAs in strict compliance with Section 5 of the RTI Act.
- Establishing a periodic review mechanism to verify and update all website content.
To ensure seamless updates, he proposed a systematic solution: a copy of every transfer or posting order issued within the LMC should be simultaneously forwarded to the IT wing for immediate record correction. Khaira believes these measures would significantly enhance transparency, boost administrative efficiency, and improve public access to essential services.
He expressed hope that the matter would receive immediate consideration and prompt corrective action from the concerned officials.
Municipal Corporation's Response
In contrast to these allegations, a senior MC official has defended the portal's management. The official maintained that the website is updated periodically and clarified that a private firm is contracted to manage its operations.
"If any shortcomings are identified, the firm will be directed to rectify them," the official stated, suggesting a reactive rather than proactive approach to the issue raised by the activist.
This discrepancy highlights an ongoing challenge in digital governance, where public expectations for real-time information clash with institutional processes for website maintenance.
