The Maharashtra state government has taken a significant step towards enhancing road safety by granting administrative approval for a major technological upgrade to its traffic management infrastructure. The decision, made on Friday, paves the way for the installation of a modern wireless Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) across hundreds of high-risk locations in the state.
Project Scope and Key Details
The ambitious project is estimated to cost a substantial Rs 923 crore. It will see the deployment of a 4G/5G technology-based wireless ITMS at a total of 869 identified accident-prone locations, commonly referred to as black spots. These sites are spread across 36 districts in all major regions of Maharashtra, including Western Maharashtra, Konkan, Marathwada, and Vidarbha.
The system will be implemented in key urban and regional centres such as Thane, Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad), and Nagpur, among others. The primary objectives of this large-scale initiative are threefold:
- To significantly reduce road accidents at dangerous spots.
- To improve traffic law enforcement through better surveillance.
- To strengthen real-time traffic monitoring capabilities for authorities.
Approval Process and Legal Backing
The administrative nod for this critical safety project was not granted in isolation. The government's approval was based directly on the recommendations of a specialized road safety fund control committee. This committee itself was formed following the orders of a Supreme Court-appointed panel on road safety, highlighting the project's foundation in judicial oversight and a structured approach to tackling the accident crisis on state highways and roads.
