Maharashtra to Establish State Water Informatics Centre in Nashik
In a significant move to enhance water resource management, the Maharashtra government is set to establish a state-level water informatics centre within the hydrology department at the Maharashtra Engineering and Research Institute (MERI) campus in Nashik. Construction for this pivotal facility is scheduled to commence this April, marking a major step forward in the state's water conservation and planning efforts.
Centralized Data Integration for Water Management
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the initiative, highlighting that the State Water Informatics Centre (SWIC) is modelled after the National Water Informatics Centre. "All data regarding water sources and consumption — across both rural and urban sectors — will be integrated into a single platform," Fadnavis stated. "This centralized system will empower the state government to ensure water availability for every consumer by 2047." The centre aims to provide a comprehensive, unified view of water resources, enabling more effective policy-making and resource allocation.
Standardizing and Aggregating Water Data
AK Desai, chief engineer of the hydrology department at MERI, elaborated on the centre's functions. The SWIC will standardize and aggregate data from multiple key agencies, including the water resources department, the Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA), the water conservation department, and the agriculture department. Additionally, it will track critical metrics such as rainfall patterns, data from Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, and consumption rates from industries, village councils, and municipal corporations.
This extensive data collection effort is designed to create a "single-window source" for the state's water resources, organized valley-wise. By consolidating information from diverse sources, the platform will facilitate better monitoring and management of water availability, usage trends, and conservation needs across Maharashtra.
