Mangaluru City Corporation Takes Proactive Steps to Avert Monsoon Flooding
In a decisive move to prevent a recurrence of artificial flooding, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a comprehensive desilting initiative for the city's rajakaluves (stormwater drains). This pre-monsoon action plan, driven by lessons from previous years' adverse experiences, aims to safeguard densely populated areas from waterlogging during heavy rains.
Swift Implementation of Desilting Works
Naresh P Shenoy, deputy commissioner (development) at MCC, revealed that the desilting of stormwater drains is set to commence within a week, following the finalization of tender processes. "We have prepared a detailed action plan to undertake desilting before the monsoon onset," he stated. "Surveys have been completed, and tenders for works estimated at nearly Rs 4 crore are in the final stage. Work orders will be issued shortly."
Government Funding and Support for Infrastructure
MLC Ivan D'Souza highlighted significant financial backing from the government, with approximately Rs 10 crore released to address damages and resume stalled projects from last year's rainfall. Officials have been directed to complete all rain-related works prior to the next monsoon season. Additionally, an extra Rs 25 crore has been allocated from the chief minister's special scheme for dredging and infrastructure repairs, underscoring a commitment to long-term flood mitigation.
Identifying Flood-Prone Zones
The initiative targets key localities that have historically suffered from inadequate stormwater drainage, leading to frequent flooding. These include:
- Malemar
- Nekkila
- Kottara Chowki
- Kodialbail
- Kodialguthu
- Mahaveer Circle
- Padil
- Jappinamogaru
By focusing on these areas, the MCC aims to enhance drainage efficiency and reduce public inconvenience during monsoon downpours.
Strategic Planning for Future Resilience
The MCC's approach involves not only immediate desilting but also broader infrastructure assessments to prevent future flooding. With detailed plans in place and funds secured, the corporation is working diligently to implement these measures, ensuring that Mangaluru is better prepared for the upcoming rainy season and beyond.
