New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) pet park in Jangpura remains non-operational nearly three years after its construction was completed, with procedural delays preventing the appointment of an agency to run the facility.
Developed in early 2023 over 1.5 acres, the park was planned as a dedicated recreational space for pet dogs, with facilities such as a day care centre, open play areas and basic veterinary services. However, the absence of an operator has left the infrastructure unused, raising questions over administrative delays and the underutilisation of public assets.
MCD officials said on Thursday that the civic body has begun a fresh process to appoint an agency to operate and maintain the park after an earlier tender failed to attract any bidders.
“We floated tenders earlier, but there was no response from agencies. The entire process has now been restarted. In the meantime, the department is ensuring regular upkeep so that the infrastructure and facilities are properly maintained,” an official said.
According to officials, the project was initially held up by the prolonged absence of the MCD standing committee, whose approval is required to finalise rates and clear proposals related to the appointment of an operator. Once operational, the park is expected to offer amenities such as veterinary services, sand play areas, pet supply shops, a cafe with a party zone, dog trails, swimming facilities and a day care centre. Dedicated defecation areas with proper lighting and signboards outlining rules and regulations are also planned.
Officials said the facility is designed to cater to all the needs of pets, with provisions for activities including running, swimming, training, tracking and digging. The presence of a large number of trees is expected to provide shade and help keep temperatures lower during summer. The park will also house grooming and medical outlets, along with a day care service aimed at supporting working pet owners, officials said.
