MCG Takes Strict Action: Official Suspended for Failing to Report Fire Incident
In a decisive move underscoring administrative discipline, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) on Wednesday suspended a senior official for his failure to report a fire incident that occurred earlier this week. The action highlights the civic body's zero-tolerance policy toward negligence in duty.
Incident Details and Immediate Suspension
The controversy stems from a fire that broke out in a sweeping machine at Mor Chowk in Civil Lines during the early hours of Tuesday. Despite being deployed at the location, Senior Sanitary Inspector (SSI) Harsh Chawla neglected to inform his superiors about the incident, leading to a delayed institutional response.
Exercising authority under the Haryana Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules of 2016, MCG placed SSI Chawla under immediate suspension pending formal disciplinary proceedings. The suspension order was issued swiftly after the matter was discussed during a sanitation review meeting chaired by MCG Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya.
Commissioner's Stern Warning and Investigation
During the meeting, Commissioner Dahiya directly questioned SSI Chawla about his failure to notify the joint commissioner or any other senior official regarding the fire. Dahiya emphasized that maintaining strict administrative discipline remains the top priority for the corporation.
"Negligence of any kind or violation of established protocols will not be tolerated under any circumstances," stated Commissioner Dahiya during the proceedings. "Complaints have also surfaced against the concerned officer regarding his disregard for public grievances and ignoring phone calls, which we are taking very seriously."
The official suspension order categorically states that SSI Chawla's failure to report the incident constituted "gross negligence, dereliction of duty, and non-performance" that potentially hampered timely response and effective management of the emergency situation.
Departmental Inquiry and Additional Measures
Following the suspension, MCG has initiated a comprehensive departmental inquiry to thoroughly investigate the entire incident. Preliminary assessments by officials suggest the fire was likely caused by an electrical short circuit in the sweeping machine.
As part of the disciplinary measures, SSI Chawla has been directed not to leave the headquarters without obtaining prior permission and must report regularly to a designated official. Despite the suspension, in accordance with Haryana government regulations, he will remain entitled to receive a subsistence allowance during this period.
The chief accounts officer of MCG has received specific instructions to release this allowance following all prescribed norms and procedures. The suspended official could not be reached for comment regarding the allegations and disciplinary action taken against him.
