MC's Unfinished Works Add to Residents' Woes During Rain

Monsoon Exposes Mohali MC's Incomplete Infrastructure Projects

As the monsoon season begins, residents of Mohali are facing severe difficulties due to unfinished civil works by the Municipal Corporation. Dug-up roads, exposed sewage lines, slush-filled streets, and dangling electricity wires have turned the city into a hazard zone. Even a brief hour of light rain left many roads waterlogged until evening, disrupting daily life.

Key Roads in Disrepair Cause Commuter Distress

The main road from Chandigarh towards Mohali Phase IX remains dug up after being excavated about a month and a half ago for new sewerage pipe installation. Despite the pipes being laid, the Municipal Corporation has failed to restore the road surface. Residents report that the stretch behind HIG houses on the road from Fortis Hospital to the Kumbhra light point is in a particularly bad state, turning into a slushy mess after rain.

Phase IX residents, including Amarpreet Kaur, Rajinder Garg, and Parshotam Kaur, said they have approached officials multiple times but the problem persists. “Earlier, dust used to blow across the road all day, turning clothes drying in houses black. Now, after the recent rainfall, the road has turned into a slushy mess,” they stated.

Councillor Highlights Persistent Pothole Danger

BJP councillor for Ward No. 41, Gurpreet Kaur, noted that the Sambhalki-Nanumajra road was heavily waterlogged after rain. “Last year, a biker fell into a pothole on this road but nothing has changed this year,” she said, appealing to the administration to clean the drains.

Before the monsoon, the Municipal Corporation had claimed to have cleaned drains across the city, but just an hour of rain disproved those claims. Manholes have not been properly cleaned, preventing water from draining effectively. A road constructed a few months ago near Phase I was flooded due to completely blocked drains.

Newly Added Areas Also Affected by Waterlogging

Rainwater also blocked many roads in the Balongi area, which was included in the city's municipal corporation for the first time. The road from the Azad Nagar Shiva Temple to the Balongi police station was flooded, adding to residents' woes.

According to the Tribune News Service, the incomplete Landran-Kharar road remains a major concern. The lack of timely action by the Municipal Corporation has left residents feeling neglected and unsafe as the monsoon intensifies.
