Overview of Recent Tremors
Between Saturday morning and the early hours of Sunday, several mild tremors were recorded across multiple talukas in Maharashtra's Nashik district. Officials confirmed that no loss of life or significant property damage occurred as a result of these seismic events.
Nashik Collector Ayush Prasad addressed the media, stating that the administration has issued directives to inspect potentially dangerous buildings, particularly in areas prone to landslides. The tremors, with a magnitude of approximately 3.6, were measured by the Maharashtra Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) based in Nashik.
Affected Areas and Timing
The first tremors were felt on Saturday morning in Surgana taluka. Subsequent tremors were reported between late Saturday night and early Sunday in Kalwan, Surgana, Dindori, and Peth talukas. District disaster management officials provided specific details: at around 11:56 pm on Saturday, mild tremors affected Dalwat in Kalwan taluka and the Nanashi and Badgicha Pada areas in Dindori taluka.
Further tremors were recorded in Shivshet village in Peth taluka at roughly 2:44 am on Sunday. Surgana city and Borgaon area experienced tremors at 11:55 pm on Saturday, followed by additional activity in Sarad, Chikhli, and Borgaon areas at around 2:45 am on Sunday. Cracks developed in the walls of a government ashramshala (residential school) in Sarad, according to another official.
Expert Analysis and Cause
Collector Prasad explained that fault lines in the western parts of Nashik are known to cause such tremors. He also noted that heavy rainfall may have contributed by increasing pressure after water percolated into the ground. "These are not the mainshock but an earthquake swarm," Prasad said. He warned that tremors could persist for days, weeks, or longer in areas experiencing such swarms.
Residents are urged to follow instructions from authorized agencies. The district administration remains vigilant and continues to monitor the situation.
