Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar conducted a review of the strengthening work on the Dhussi Bundh in the Ajnala constituency. The minister inspected the ongoing project aimed at reinforcing the embankment to prevent flooding in the region.
Detailed Inspection
During the visit, Minister Bhullar walked along several kilometers of the bundh, assessing the progress and quality of construction. He was accompanied by senior officials from the irrigation department and local representatives. The minister directed the officials to ensure that the work adheres to the prescribed standards and is completed within the stipulated timeframe.
Key Directives
- Quality Assurance: The minister emphasized the use of high-quality materials and proper engineering techniques to ensure the durability of the bundh.
- Timely Completion: He instructed the contractors to expedite the work without compromising on quality, as the monsoon season approaches.
- Community Safety: Bhullar highlighted that the strengthened bundh would safeguard thousands of acres of agricultural land and numerous villages from annual floods.
Background
The Dhussi Bundh, an earthen embankment along the river, has historically been prone to breaches during heavy rains. The current strengthening project, sanctioned under a state flood control scheme, aims to raise and widen the bundh, besides installing protective stone pitching. The project is expected to benefit over 50 villages in the Ajnala area.
Minister's Statement
Speaking to reporters, Minister Bhullar said, "The state government is committed to providing robust flood protection infrastructure. We are closely monitoring the progress and will not tolerate any laxity in work. The safety of our farmers and residents is our top priority." He added that regular inspections would continue to ensure accountability.
Local residents expressed optimism about the project, hoping it would end the cycle of flood damage they have endured for years. The completion date for the strengthening work has been set for May, ahead of the monsoon rains.
