A large-scale mock exercise focused on earthquake preparedness unfolded across Mizoram on Thursday. Authorities staged this state-level drill to rigorously test disaster response and relief systems. The event covered all eleven districts of the northeastern state.
Coordinated Effort for Disaster Preparedness
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Mizoram's own Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Department jointly organized the exercise. Their goal was clear: to assess and improve the state's readiness for a major seismic event.
Simulating Real Earthquake Scenarios
Teams created realistic mock scenarios at thirty-six different locations statewide. These simulations included dramatic situations like building collapses, sudden fire outbreaks, and simulated casualties. The aim was to mimic the chaos and challenges of an actual earthquake.
Officials closely monitored the entire operation. They watched activities at District Emergency Operation Centres, various incident sites, staging areas, and relief camps. Video conferencing technology allowed for real-time observation across the widespread exercise area.
Leadership and Oversight
Brigadier Ravinder Gurung (retd), a senior consultant with the NDMA, oversaw proceedings from the State Emergency Operation Centre. He did not work alone. State observers joined him, including PC Lallawmsanga, the former principal secretary of DM&R, and Dominic Lalhmangaiha, the former director of the same department.
Massive Participation from Multiple Agencies
The drill commenced sharply at 10:00 AM. Participation was extensive and involved numerous key agencies. District Quick Response Forces sprang into action alongside the Fire & Emergency Services.
National and State Disaster Response Force units played crucial roles. The exercise also saw involvement from units based in neighboring Assam and Tripura. These included personnel from the CISF, Assam Rifles, and the Border Security Force (BSF).
Medical teams rushed to treat the simulated injured. Civil society organizations and many volunteers also contributed significantly to the day's operations, showcasing a whole-of-society approach to disaster management.
This comprehensive drill highlights Mizoram's proactive steps in strengthening its resilience against natural disasters. Testing these protocols ensures that if a real earthquake strikes, response teams will be better prepared to save lives and manage the crisis effectively.
