In response to mounting public frustration over years of neglected civic infrastructure, Mohali Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal conducted a comprehensive on-site review of critical works in Kharar on Thursday. The inspection focused particularly on the severely deteriorated Kharar–Landran road, where deep potholes and hazardous conditions have plagued commuters for an extended period.
Hazardous Road Conditions Prompt Urgent Action
The deteriorating state of the Kharar–Landran road, especially near Shiwalik city and other sections, has transformed daily commuting into a perilous endeavor. Deep potholes dot the surface, creating significant risks for all vehicles. Two-wheeler riders bear the brunt of this neglect, with frequent accidents and falls being commonly reported. Even four-wheelers are not spared, as cars often suffer engine damage from scraping against the uneven and broken road surface.
The situation has worsened following recent rainfall, which further eroded the already poor road conditions. Temporary barricades installed along one side of the road have also begun collapsing, adding to the safety concerns. This persistent issue has fueled public anger, with residents repeatedly appealing for intervention to address the dangerous infrastructure.
DC Directs Immediate Road Restoration Measures
During her visit, Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal took decisive action to tackle the road crisis. She directed the Executive Officer of the Municipal Council, Kharar, to immediately float tenders for road restoration work. The goal is to ensure that repair activities commence by March 2026, providing a clear timeline for much-needed improvements.
Mittal also emphasized the importance of proper storm water management to prevent waterlogging, instructing officials to implement scientific disposal methods. This holistic approach aims to not only fix the road but also address underlying drainage issues that contribute to the deterioration.
Review of Sewerage and Storm Water Projects
Beyond road repairs, the Deputy Commissioner's inspection included an assessment of other vital infrastructure projects. She visited the under-construction Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Khoonimajra village, where officials from the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board reported that approximately 70% of the work has been completed. The plant is expected to be commissioned by July 2026, with Mittal stressing the need for timely completion to enhance the region's sewerage infrastructure.
Additionally, Mittal reviewed storm water disposal works at Chajjumajra Road near SBP Homes. She instructed the Executive Officer to complete all pending tasks, including tile laying, well before the monsoon season begins. "Residents should not face inconvenience during the rainy season," she emphasized, highlighting the administration's commitment to proactive measures.
Officials Present During Inspection
The review was conducted with the presence of key officials, ensuring coordinated efforts for implementation. Additional Deputy Commissioner (Urban Development) Anmol Singh Dhaliwal, SDM (Kharar) Divya P, and other concerned officers accompanied DC Mittal during the inspection, underscoring the collective focus on resolving Kharar's civic challenges.
