MRPL CSR Initiative Allocates Over ₹2.3 Crore for Coastal Karnataka School Infrastructure
In a significant move to enhance educational facilities in rural coastal Karnataka, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) has disbursed substantial corporate social responsibility (CSR) grants to selected government schools in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. The funding, exceeding ₹2.3 crore, aims to address critical infrastructure gaps and improve learning environments for students.
Addressing Classroom Shortages in Government Schools
MLC Manjunath Bhandary highlighted the pressing issue of inadequate classroom facilities despite rising student enrollments in numerous government schools across the coastal regions. "Taking this issue seriously, I personally visited the schools to understand their needs," Bhandary stated. "There is a necessity for well-equipped buildings for the educational welfare of poor and rural children."
Following his assessment, Bhandary formally appealed to MRPL directors for special funding. The company responded positively, approving the allocation of funds to support infrastructure development projects.
Detailed Breakdown of Fund Allocation
The CSR grants have been strategically distributed across multiple educational institutions:
- Udupi District:
- Muniyalu Karnataka Public School (Primary Section) in Hebri taluk: ₹95 lakh for a new room construction.
- Hebri Govt Model Higher Primary School: ₹95 lakh for infrastructure development.
- Hebri Govt Pre-University College (high school section): ₹78.8 lakh for development works.
- Bajagoli Govt High School, Siddapura Govt High School, and Basrur Govt High School: ₹78.8 lakh each, totaling ₹2.36 crore for the district.
- Dakshina Kannada District:
- Benjanapadavu Govt Pre-University College: ₹92 lakh for a well-equipped auditorium construction.
- Three new classrooms: ₹40 lakh reserved for construction.
- Vamadapadavu Govt Model Higher Primary School: ₹80 lakh for a new building to enhance learning facilities.

Bhandary emphasized the transformative potential of this funding, stating, "The utilisation of this substantial amount of funding will transform the face of govt schools, bringing a new ray of hope to the rural educational sector. Such partnerships with industrial organisations will be a boon for govt school students."
