MSEDCL Intensifies Crackdown on Power Theft in Jalna District
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has initiated a rigorous special campaign aimed at exposing and curbing power theft activities. This decisive action follows the detection of temporary disconnections of power supply in 62 separate cases across villages located in the Ambad taluka of Jalna district.
Legal Action and Financial Impact
In response to these violations, the state power utility has officially registered offences against all the errant consumers under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003. Sanjay Sarg, the Superintending Engineer of Jalna, provided detailed insights on Sunday, revealing that the affected consumers span a diverse range, including domestic households, commercial establishments, and industrial users, with specific mentions of roadside hotels and eateries.
These consumers collectively owed outstanding electricity bill arrears amounting to a substantial Rs 19,51,265. Despite receiving repeated reminders to clear their dues, they failed to comply, leading to the disconnection of their power supply several months ago. Shockingly, even after the disconnection, these individuals managed to steal 60,801 units of electricity.
According to MSEDCL estimates, the value of this stolen electricity reaches an alarming Rs 10,15,200. When combined with the nearly Rs 20 lakhs in unpaid bills, the total financial loss inflicted on the state power utility escalates to approximately Rs 30 lakhs. This significant sum underscores the severe economic impact of such illicit activities on public resources.
Ongoing Vigilance and Public Appeal
Emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, MSEDCL authorities have announced that the detection drive will persist across the region. They have issued a strong appeal to all electricity consumers, urging them to promptly clear any outstanding electricity bill arrears and to ensure they utilize electricity only through authorized connections.
Dnyaneshwar Ardad, the Public Relations Officer for the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar zone of MSEDCL, highlighted a concerning trend among some consumers. "Some consumers have adopted a strategy of refusing to pay their electricity bills and resort to stealing electricity when their power supply is temporarily disconnected," he stated. He further warned that drawing unauthorized power constitutes a criminal offence and will lead to stringent legal action.
To enforce this crackdown effectively, MSEDCL has deployed specialized teams comprising engineers, technical staff, and officials from the Human Resources and Accounts departments. These teams are maintaining constant surveillance on errant consumers to prevent further instances of power theft and ensure compliance with electricity regulations.
