Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to install public dustbins at 100 identified locations across the city to enhance waste collection and ensure scientific disposal. The initiative will cover busy markets, bus stops, commercial streets, parks, and other public spaces.
Pilot Phase Underway
As part of the pilot phase, dustbins have been placed along Devaraj Urs Road and around Mysuru Palace premises. Civic authorities hope this initiative will reduce littering and improve cleanliness standards in high-footfall areas before expanding to additional locations across the city.
Funding and Implementation
The dustbins are arranged under CSR funds provided by SBI Foundation and Green Squad. Steel dustbins for separate dry and wet waste collection have been placed every 100 meters along the 900-meter stretch of D Devaraj Urs Road and Mysuru Palace surroundings.
Vendors operating on D Devaraj Urs Road and near Mysuru Palace have been instructed to ensure their customers use the installed dustbins, while also sensitizing the public, tourists, and citizens visiting their shops. Civic workers have been directed to clear the waste from these dustbins three times daily, depending on the amount collected, and transport it to the dumping yard.
Monitoring and Maintenance
A Green Squad has been entrusted with monitoring these locations. They must ensure the areas remain clean and tidy, without any dumping by shopkeepers, vendors, or the public. MCC has provided the squad with a brooming machine worth Rs 85 lakh to keep the streets near Mysuru Palace and D Devaraj Urs Road clean.
Due to vendors discarding waste such as disposable plates, glasses, empty pan masala sachets, papers, and plastic water bottles on streets, posing a threat to cleanliness despite warnings and penalties, MCC placed public litter bins to direct vendors and the public to use them instead of discarding waste on the streets.
Future Expansion
Depending on the success of this initiative, MCC plans to place similar steel dustbins for separate dry and wet waste collection near prominent tourist spots like Mysuru Zoo, Karanji Lake Park, St Philomena’s Cathedral, and Chamundi Hills, among others.
MCC Swachata nodal officer KS Mruthyunjaya stated that the corporation has decided to place public dustbins in prominent tourist spots and busy commercial streets to curb roadside littering and ensure cleanliness. MCC has also sensitized street vendors, the D Devaraj Urs Road Tenants Association, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the civic body to keep the city clean and promote tourism. The initiative aims to promote cleanliness and encourage citizens to dispose of waste responsibly.
