Nagpur's Four Flyover Construction Sparks Major Traffic Chaos and Commuter Woes
Nagpur Flyover Construction Causes Major Traffic Disruption

Nagpur's Major Infrastructure Push Creates Traffic Nightmare for Commuters

The simultaneous construction of four major flyovers in east Nagpur has plunged the city's traffic system into complete disarray, leaving thousands of daily commuters struggling with extensive road closures, confusing barricades, and chaotic diversion routes. With critical stretches either completely sealed or partially barricaded for construction work, residents report that the absence of traffic marshals or police personnel has significantly worsened congestion across already crowded localities.

Key Infrastructure Projects Funded by Maharashtra Government

These flyovers represent a major infrastructure initiative being implemented by MahaRail in Nagpur, with funding provided by the Maharashtra urban development department. The four ambitious flyover projects are specifically designed to ease traffic flow in the Kharbi, Ladpura, and Nandanvan areas, though their construction phase has created substantial challenges for residents.

Critical Stretch at Jagnade Square-Gangabai Ghat Road Severely Affected

One of the most severely impacted areas is the Jagnade Square-Gangabai Ghat Road corridor. The complete closure of this vital road for flyover construction has forced motorists to take lengthy detours through narrow internal roads, many of which cannot handle the increased traffic volume. During peak hours, this results in extensive vehicle queues, frequent bottlenecks, and rising frustration among commuters.

Pedestrian Bridges Become Dangerous Alternatives

Local residents have been compelled to use two pedestrian bridges over the Nag River to navigate between neighborhoods that have been effectively cut off by the construction activities. Residents allege that these old and structurally vulnerable bridges are being illegally used by autorickshaws and other small vehicles. Following numerous complaints, authorities installed barricades to prevent vehicular access, but this created new problems.

"We now have to squeeze through narrow gaps between barricades, risking imbalance and potential accidents," explained Sanjay Ramteke, a local resident. "If these bridges are not safe for vehicles, authorities should implement strict monitoring instead of creating new hazards for pedestrians."

Details of the Four Major Flyover Projects

The infrastructure projects include:

  • A ₹251 crore, 2.3-kilometer-long flyover stretching from Reshimbagh Chowk to KDK College Square, and from Telephone Exchange Chowk to Bhande Plot Chowk in the Nandanvan area
  • A ₹66 crore flyover being constructed from Chandrashekhar Azad Chowk to Marwadi Chowk at Masurkar Marg in Ladpura, spanning 564 meters
  • A ₹66 crore flyover from Nandanvan Rajendra Nagar Square to Hasanbag Chowk in Kharbi, covering 859 meters
  • A ₹274 crore, 2.72-kilometer flyover from Wardhaman Nagar IOCL petrol pump (Shivaji Chowk) to Nirmal Nagari on Umred Road at Middle Ring Road in Kharbi

Widespread Traffic Congestion Across Multiple Intersections

Commuters report that intersections near Jagnade Square, Nandanvan, Kharbi, and Bagadganj regularly experience severe traffic jams, particularly during morning and evening peak hours. The simultaneous nature of these four construction projects has created a perfect storm of traffic disruption that affects multiple neighborhoods across east Nagpur.

The infrastructure development, while promising long-term traffic relief, has created immediate challenges that require better traffic management, improved communication about diversions, and enhanced safety measures for pedestrians navigating the construction zones.
