Nagpur's Cotton Market Metro Skywalk Structurally Complete, Awaits Mandatory Safety Approvals

The long-delayed Cotton Market Metro skywalk in Nagpur has reached a significant milestone, with structural construction fully completed. Senior MahaMetro officials have confirmed that the project now awaits mandatory safety clearances before it can be opened to the public, marking the final procedural stage of this important infrastructure development.

Construction Finished, Regulatory Process Begins

Civil construction work on the ₹10 crore, 120-metre foot over bridge (FOB) has been entirely wrapped up, including painting and the installation of lifts and staircases. The skywalk, built across the center of Cotton Market Square, represents a substantial investment in Nagpur's urban mobility infrastructure. With all on-ground work completed, attention has now shifted entirely to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals that will allow public access.

The approval process involves two critical stages:

  1. A fire department inspection scheduled for March 5 to obtain the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC)
  2. Submission to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for operational clearance once fire safety approval is secured

Safety Compliance Assessment Pending

The CMRS inspection will conduct a comprehensive assessment of multiple safety parameters, including structural integrity, emergency access systems, and passenger movement arrangements. This thorough evaluation ensures that the skywalk meets all established safety standards before welcoming commuters.

A senior MahaMetro official emphasized that the project has entered its final phase: "The structure is fully ready. The only pending part is the approval process. The fire inspection is lined up for March 5, after which we will apply for CMRS clearance. Once the approval is granted, the facility can be opened for public use, which will be done by the end of this financial year."

Addressing Critical Infrastructure Need

The skywalk will serve as a crucial second entry and exit point for the Cotton Market Metro station on the Aqua Line between Sitabuldi and the railway station. This station, located near Nagpur's bustling vegetable and orange markets, handles significant daily footfall numbering in the hundreds. Until now, it has operated with only a single access point, which violates established regulations requiring multiple entry and exit facilities for stations with substantial passenger volumes.

The new skywalk will significantly improve passenger flow, enhance safety through better crowd management, and provide more convenient access to the metro system for thousands of daily commuters.

Timeline Revisions and Public Expectations

The project has experienced multiple deadline revisions, initially scheduled for August completion, then pushed to October, and now further extended to March. These repeated timeline shifts have drawn criticism from commuters who have watched the project's progress with anticipation. With construction now complete, the project's launch depends entirely on the statutory inspection and clearance process.

If the approval process proceeds smoothly without unexpected delays, the skywalk is expected to open to the public soon after the required certifications are granted. This development represents a significant step forward in Nagpur's urban infrastructure development, addressing both regulatory compliance and passenger convenience at one of the city's busiest metro stations.
