Nashik Municipal Corporation Introduces Citizen-Led Garden Maintenance Initiative
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is gearing up to launch an innovative citizen-participation model aimed at improving the upkeep of gardens across the city. This initiative seeks to enhance maintenance standards and ensure long-term sustainability of Nashik's green spaces.
Encouraging Resident Involvement in Garden Upkeep
Under this new model, residents living near municipal gardens will be encouraged to take charge of routine maintenance activities. The civic body will provide funding for essential works, creating a collaborative approach to garden management. NMC currently oversees nearly 1,000 gardens spread across its six divisions.
To begin implementation, a select group of gardens will be handed over to residents on a pilot basis. The model will then be scaled up in phases depending on its initial success and effectiveness.
Municipal Commissioner Presents Proposal
Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri presented this proposal during last week's standing committee meeting. She noted that while contractors currently handle tasks such as removing dried leaves and grass, involving citizens could significantly improve accountability and the overall quality of upkeep.
Khatri urged residents to form committees dedicated to repair and maintenance activities, adding that organizations and self-help groups could also participate in this collaborative effort.
Addressing Maintenance Concerns
Her statement followed repeated complaints from standing committee members about inadequate maintenance by private contractors. Khatri assured them that the participatory model would help enhance work standards and ensure better care of Nashik's green spaces.
"Initially, a few gardens will be managed through citizen groups, and the remaining will gradually be brought under the model in phases," she explained during the meeting.
Current Garden Management Structure
According to NMC officials, most gardens in Nashik are currently maintained by private contractors, with only a limited number under direct municipal supervision. To strengthen the city's green infrastructure, the civic body has allocated substantial funds for the garden department in its municipal budget.
This includes provisions for:
- Tree plantation drives
- Routine maintenance activities
- Related green initiatives
Budget Allocation for Green Initiatives
In the 2026-27 budget, NMC has earmarked Rs 25 crore specifically for the garden department. Approximately Rs 9 crore of this allocation will go toward citywide tree plantation efforts aimed at expanding Nashik's green cover.
This comprehensive initiative is expected to boost community engagement and enhance civic participation while improving the quality and sustainability of Nashik's public gardens. The citizen-led approach represents a significant shift in how municipal green spaces are managed, potentially serving as a model for other cities facing similar maintenance challenges.
