While civic authorities in Bengaluru focus largely on improving arterial and sub-arterial roads, the most neglected stretches continue to be ward-level internal roads, despite their crucial role in last-mile connectivity. A glaring example is Munekolalu in east Bengaluru, under the Bengaluru East city corporation, where several internal roads have been in a deplorable condition for nearly a year now.
Roads Dug Up for Pipeline Work Left Unrestored
The roads were dug up for pipeline work within the layout but were not restored since, leaving residents to deal with damaged and uneven stretches. Madusudhan Amar, a resident of Munekolalu, told TOI, "We have been suffering for months as the roads are extremely bad. I can't take my car out because there are bumps on every single internal road. The pipeline work seems to be over, but the road is not restored. I have complained multiple times, but there has been no response."
Dust and Health Concerns
Echoing similar concerns, another resident, Priyavathsan Iyengar, pointed to the severe dust problem. "This is a crowded area with heavy vehicle movement, and the dust is unbearable. I somehow manage to commute, but I cannot take my 11-month-old baby out as it leads to infections," he said.
Key Locality Despite Neglect
Munekolalu is a key locality connecting Outer Ring Road on one side and Old Airport Road and Varthur on the other. The area houses a large working population, including migrants and paying guests, making it densely populated and active throughout the day. Despite this, residents allege it remains one of the most neglected pockets along Outer Ring Road, with poor road and drain maintenance.
Waterlogging and Sewage Woes
The situation worsens during rains, when the area faces severe waterlogging due to inadequate drainage. Residents say sewage water often flows onto the roads, compounding the problem and making commuting both difficult and unhygienic.
Anand, a regular commuter on the stretch, said, "The ward roads in Munekolalu have multiple problems — potholes, frequent waterlogging, heavy traffic congestion, and lack of proper footpaths. Dust from construction and broken roads is another major concern, along with poor street lighting."
Official Response
An assistant executive engineer from the east city corporation said, "Only recently, ward roads came under our engineering team after formation of GBA. We now have funds as well. Currently, BWSSB is carrying out works in the area, and once that is completed, proper developmental works will be taken up. There is also a shortage of bitumen due to the ongoing war, which may delay asphalting works. However, we will ensure the roads are fixed before the monsoon."
