NHAI to Commence Toll Operations at New Plazas in Vijayawada from April 1

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is poised to initiate toll collection at two newly established toll plazas in the Vijayawada region, marking a significant shift in the local highway infrastructure. Starting April 1, the Venkatayapalem and Vedurupavuluru toll plazas will become operational, while the existing Pottipadu toll plaza will be permanently decommissioned.

Infrastructure Overhaul and Traffic Management

This strategic move is part of a broader effort to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion in Vijayawada. The Pottipadu toll plaza, which previously fell under the jurisdiction of the NHAI Vijayawada Project Implementation Unit (PIU), will be replaced by the new Vedurupavuluru toll plaza located on the bypass stretch. This replacement is expected to streamline toll operations and improve efficiency for commuters.

In a phased manner, the NHAI has already opened the entire 47-kilometer Vijayawada West Bypass stretch to vehicular traffic. However, a minor 100-meter section at the vehicle underpass (VUP) in Nunna remains pending due to ongoing court cases. Once completed, this section will further optimize the bypass functionality.

Benefits of the 47-Kilometer West Bypass

The six-lane bypass road, stretching from Chinna Avutapalli to Kaza, offers substantial relief to Vijayawada city by diverting heavy vehicular traffic away from urban centers. It effectively bypasses congestion on both the Kolkata-Chennai national highway (NH-16) and the Vijayawada-Hyderabad route (NH-65). This enables vehicles traveling between Chennai and Visakhapatnam, as well as those moving between Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad, to circumvent Vijayawada city traffic from the western side.

Key features of the West Bypass include:

  • The Bahubali River Over Bridge (ROB), which connects Gollapudi to Chinna Kakani in Mangalagiri.
  • Execution under two packages: one from Chinna Avutapalli to Gollapudi and another from Gollapudi to Chinna Kakani.
  • Enhanced connectivity and reduced travel times for long-distance commuters.

Reduced Toll Fees and Economic Impact

According to NHAI Amaravati PIU project director Parvathi Sundaram, the introduction of the new Venkatapalem toll plaza on the bypass stretch will lead to a reduction in toll fees for vehicles at the Kaza toll plaza. Previously, vehicle users at Kaza were required to pay toll fees for the distance between Chilakaluripeta and Kanaka Durgamma Varadhi. With the new setup, toll fees at Kaza will now be calculated only from Chilakaluripeta to Kaza, resulting in lower costs for commuters.

This adjustment is anticipated to provide financial relief to frequent travelers and boost local economic activity by making transportation more affordable.

Future Implications and Regional Development

The operationalization of these new toll plazas and the full utilization of the West Bypass are expected to have far-reaching effects on regional transportation. By alleviating traffic bottlenecks, the NHAI aims to improve road safety, reduce pollution, and support the growth of trade and commerce in the area. The project underscores the government's commitment to upgrading national highway infrastructure and fostering sustainable urban development.

As April 1 approaches, stakeholders, including local residents and business operators, are closely monitoring these changes, anticipating smoother journeys and enhanced connectivity across Andhra Pradesh.
